Commercial Recycling Guidelines

MarBorg provides commercial collection services tailored to businesses of every size. Whether you need a single cart or multiple large containers, we'll customize a collection program that fits your operation.

Available Containers

Choose from a variety of container sizes:

  • 32-Gallon Can – Backyard service

  • 35-, 64-, and 96-Gallon Carts

  • 1.5-, 2-, 3-, and 4-Cubic Yard Bins

  • Roll-Off Containers and Compactors for high-volume waste generators

We'll work with you to determine the appropriate container sizes, number of containers, and collection frequency based on your business's needs.

Service is available one to six days per week, on a schedule that works for your business.

Preparing for Collection

On your scheduled service day, please ensure our drivers have full access to your containers. Gates and enclosures should be unlocked, and in some cases, you may need to move your container to an accessible collection location.

Container Security

Bar-and-lock mechanisms are available for commercial bins to help prevent unauthorized use. Please request this option when ordering your container.

Container Colors

Containers are color-coded according to the material they are designed to collect:

  • Beige: Trash

  • Green: Green Waste

  • Blue: Recycling

Food Scraps Composting

Businesses may also be eligible to participate in MarBorg's Food Scraps Composting Program.

Mandatory Commercial Recycling (AB 341)

California's AB 341 (Assembly Bill 341), which took effect on July 1, 2012, established mandatory commercial recycling requirements for qualifying businesses.

The law requires businesses (including public entities) and multifamily residential properties with five or more units to arrange for recycling services.

Depending on your location and the amount of waste your business generates, additional recycling requirements may also apply.

If your business does not currently recycle, MarBorg can help you establish a recycling program that diverts valuable materials from the landfill while potentially reducing your monthly disposal costs.

Purpose of the Law

AB 341 was created to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting commercial solid waste from landfills while expanding recycling services and recycling-related manufacturing throughout California.

Commercial Recycling Requirements

Businesses that generate four cubic yards or more of commercial solid waste per week, and multifamily residential properties with five or more units, are required to arrange for recycling services.

Businesses may comply through one or a combination of the following methods:

  • Self-haul recyclable materials.

  • Subscribe to recycling collection through a licensed hauler.

  • Arrange for pickup of recyclable materials.

  • Subscribe to a recycling service that includes mixed-waste processing with diversion results comparable to source separation.

Property owners of commercial businesses or multifamily residential properties may also require tenants to separate recyclable materials to assist with compliance.

Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling (AB 1826)

California adopted AB 1826 (Assembly Bill 1826) in 2014, establishing mandatory commercial organics recycling requirements beginning in 2016.

For purposes of the law, organic waste includes:

  • Food waste

  • Green waste

  • Landscape and pruning waste

  • Nonhazardous wood waste

  • Food-soiled paper mixed with food waste

As of January 1, 2019, businesses (including public entities) and multifamily residential properties with five or more units that generate four cubic yards or more of solid waste per week are required to recycle their organic waste.

Purpose of the Law

AB 1826 was phased in over time, beginning with California's largest organic waste generators. Its goal is to keep compostable materials out of landfills, where decomposing organic waste generates methane—a greenhouse gas significantly more potent than carbon dioxide.

Implementation Timeline

  • April 1, 2016: Businesses generating eight cubic yards or more of organic waste per week were required to recycle organic waste.

  • January 1, 2017: Businesses generating four cubic yards or more of organic waste per week were required to recycle organic waste.

  • January 1, 2019: Businesses generating four cubic yards or more of solid waste per week were required to recycle organic waste.
